The concert of ensemble Anja & Zlatna „When the Roads Meet: Balkan Crossings“ will take place at prestigious Melbourne Recital Centre on Saturday 8th April at 6pm. This performance is part of Local Heroes chamber music series at this venue, but also the first one in Anja & Zlatna series this year. They will perform music of Serbia, Hungary, Bosnia and other mostly Balkan countries. The concert is sold out, so make sure you get the tickets for the next one in time!

Anja & Zlatna stands out among numerous world music performers and ensembles all over the world thanks to their amazing blend of traditional melodies from various countries and elements of Baroque music. This extraordinary mixture they create is supported by unusual and yet very appealing musical arrangements and combination of musical instruments incorporated with two vocals. The sound of harpsichord in hands of harpsichordist and organist PhD Donald Nicolson sometimes gives that touch of baroque and sometimes sounds like different traditional musical instruments. The same happens with guitar, flute, acoustic bass, balalaika, Jew’s harp, percussions, clarinet and other instruments which also create wonderful sound of Anja & Zlatna. When it comes to vocals, the ensemble is actually named by them. Anja is the nickname of artistic director and vocal PhD Aleksandra Acker, while Zlatna is Serbian word for adjective “golden” in female gender and it refers to golden hair of other vocal Kirsty Morphett, who also plays guitar in this ensemble when it’s included in arrangement. Anja and Zlatna (Kirsty) perform some songs even acapella. On the other hand, some tunes are performed as instrumentals. However, no matter the arrangements their performances always take audience to wonderful, exciting journey.

As Suzanne Yanko wrote in her review of Anja & Zlatna’s performance at ABC Classic FM radio in 2014th:

“With harmony intrinsic to these songs, the match of voices is a delight….The versatility of the four instrumentalists is matched only by the charm of the unexpectedness of their combination…. The perfect music that makes the listener want to dance, sing or simply hear more…”

(Classic Melbourne, 2014)

Even though passion for Serbian and Balkan music in general brought them together, Anja & Zlatna feels and performs the music from around the globe with the same zest and authenticity. Since 2013th when they started to play together they gave concerts at Melbourne Recital Centre, Iwaki Auditorium ABC Southbank Centre (Melbourne), Kolarac (Belgrade, Serbia) and other renowned concert venues. They also published three CDs for Pughouse Studios from Melbourne. The ensemble regularly performs for charity too and for those in need from all over the world.

After the concert „When the Roads Meet: Balkan Crossings“ on Saturday, Anja & Zlatna will give concert “Love and Other Secrets” at Melbourne Recital Centre on September the 6th. Be aware that you should purchase tickets in time! More info here.
